Kardeslerim Season 1 Recap: Characters Part 1 The GREATER Eren Family

Season 2 of Kardeslerim is coming on September 11th *maybe* and I can not be happier. It is hard to describe the spot that Kardeslerim filled. I'd seen little clips on youtube here and there but hadn't really been interested in starting another show set in high school (I was wrong about that detail. It's actually a family drama but they do A LOT in the high school) until I saw this little snippet that peaked my interest. I binged the entire 4 existing episodes in one night and then began watching live. With each episode I became more invested... so in anticipation I'll be doing some recaps of Season 1 starting first with some characters and how they relate to one another. I'll also slander my least favorite characters and obviously criticize acting ability and styling choices because I am ME after all.

Veli "Don't get attached cause he's dead" Eren
This isn't a pic from the show because (serious spoiler) he wasn't in the show long enough to generate a ton of production materials. Veli was slightly murdered when he confronted Akif Atakul--you'll hear about him A LOT--about causing his wife's accident. Veli was kind hearted, hard working, upstanding, and had a strong moral compass. You can see these traits passed down to his eldest son, Kadir. Veli worked at a construction site for Akif Atakul in a slightly unskilled job and stressed the importance of education to his children, particularly Omer.

Hatice "Don't get attached to her either" Eren
Hatice is Veli's wife who had the misfortune of catching Akif Atakul (told you we'd be seeing this name often) and Susan Hanim having an affair. Akif tried to offer her money for silence but she is also an upright person who refused to take his money and also said she wouldn't say anything. Unfortunately, this conversation resulted in a car accident where Hatice was injured. Akif didn't call for medical help immediately and Hatice died the same day as her husband subsequently leaving their four children orphaned and at the mercy of some pretty crappy relatives. Hatice worked for the Atakul family as a housekeeper and was particularly beloved by Melisa, the Atakul's teenaged daughter. Hatice was loving, kind, empathetic, and the heart of her home. She had a particularly close relationship with Omer. Aspects of her kind heart  and virtuous character are seen clearly in her daughter Asiye.

Kadir "Has more outfits than a 'poor' guy should" Eren
Kadir is the eldest Eren sibling who didn't graduate high school because of conflicts with teachers and works construction with his father. When he assumes responsibility for his siblings he ends up getting kicked out of their home and forced to live in a chicken coop. He also ends up getting stabbed. After he saves Akif Atakul (here we go again) from dying he gets a job at Ataman College (high school for you non Turkish Dizi watching fools) as a barista. I don't know how that makes more than a construction worker, but *shrug* eventually they all will  have to work at the school. He is quiet, respectful, and honors family above all else... and as a result ends up in a few bizarre love triangles. More on that some OTHER day. His main characteristic is pride. He refuses to accept insincere help or charity and has the unsavory habit of offering to pay for things that a) he is not responsible for and b) does not have the money to pay for. He can be infuriating at times.

Asiye "Little Red Wool Coat" Eren
First off, lets talk outfits, I chose this picture because everyone HATES those corduroy pants and turtleneck combo that Asiye has in MULTIPLE colors. Asiye is the oldest daughter of the Eren family and Omer's "twin". She has a kind but reserved personality, and a lovely singing voice. After her parent's death, Asiye serves as a mother figure to the family and the emotional support for all her siblings. She's a hard worker and good student. Asiye doesn't usually confide in others, choosing to keep her difficulties to herself. Despite an initial revulsion she begins to have feelings for Doruk Atakul (son of Akif, her parent's murderer) which eventually lead to a tentative relationship beloved by the fandom, and the reason for the show's success. Let's be honest. None of us are watching for KadMel... AsDor as the couple is called collectively show a more lively sweet aspect of Asiye's character which I assume was her natural state before hear parent's death.

Omer "Not really an Eren" Eren
Surprise and Spoiler, Omer is ACTUALLY the love child of Susan Hanim and some dude named Ahmet. Veli took the abandoned Omer home after his birth and decided to raise him as Asiye's "twin" as they were only a few weeks apart in age. Omer is the Eren that just has the worst luck... he gets framed for this, he gets framed for that, Harika is his half sister... It's a lot. Omer is very intelligent and the apple of Hattice Eren's eye. He wants to be a doctor. Initially, he had an unrequited love for Melisa Atakul (Akif's daughter... who is dating his brother... the Mel portion of the most boring couple in the universe...) but begins dating a girl named Ayse later on. His friendship with his cousin Ogulcan gets him into difficult situations, but ultimately the love of his family help him to eventually have a firm moral resolve. His crying is very tragic, and his life is sad so he cries a lot.

Emel "Burns Money for Fun" Eren
Emel is the youngest Eren, her hobbies include drawing on walls in the chicken coop and burning money. She acts as the heart of the family, her tears have the ability to keep people in check. She is the first AsDor shipper in the Eren family and first to spot that Asiye liked Doruk as more than a friend. For a kid who's just lost her parents and life is uprooted, Emel is bizarrely normal. She tolerates being carted back and forth with various people watching her and some truly nasty cooking by Omer and Sengul.
